Unable to communicate, and with bizarre behaviour, the creature – currently female and named Dren – becomes more of a child to the couple than an experiment… which is why it is very disconcerting to see a now ‘teenage’ chimera develop a crush on one of the human scientists. The creature, which starts off looking like a cross between a chicken and a puppy, grows quickly, and changes with nearly every new segment of the film, and it becomes more and more human as the tale unfolds.Ī newborn Dren - part chicken, part puppy.
Originally the plan is to just see if they can create a viable embryo, then destroy it before birth (entre a big red ‘abort’ button), but, as the audience knows is bound to happen, this doesn’t go according to plan and the ‘baby’ is born.Īlong the way there are numerous attempts to kill it, but ultimately both decide to keep it for ‘research purposes’. Sound a bit like the typical mad scientist? Yes and no. The brains behind the operation, a romantically involved scientific duo, are unhappy with their new task of creating a marketable product from the protein, and secretly return to their splicing of DNA – but this time with human genes thrown into the mix.

It’s the kind of movie you have to search for only one cinema on the Gold Coast will show it, a grand total of a dozen Australia wide.īut unlike Paranormal Activity it is doubtful that Splice will be demanded as a mainstream release – and a les than modest opening day release could see it sent to the cutting room floor in less than a week.
